296.43 A CHANUKAH CELEBRATION (2003)
Cha

Entertaining celebration of the Festival of Chanukah for the entire family. The program includes songs, stories, home decorating tips/crafts, a Chanukah dessert demonstration and a children’s segment with live action puppetry including “Mitzvah Mouse.” Host Fran Drescher introduces each segment. Special guests include Jewish singers Craig Taubman and Theodore Bikel; The Learning Channel’s Teresa Strasser and Whizzen Institute’s Risa Gruberger on craft ideas; Chef Jeff Nathan on making Banana Sufganiot Pudding; a Reggae Chanukah presentation of Chanukah blessings in song and dance by Alan Eder & Friends; and a children’s segment in which Mitzvah Mouse takes kids back to the time of the Maccabbees (Taubman sings “Maoz Tzur” and “Shehechiyanu.” Bikel sings “Oh Hanukkah, Oh Hanukkah” in Yiddish and English). Note: Similar in style to “A Taste of Chanukah,” this video offers a wide variety of songs and activities for Chanukah. The only potential problem for audiences is that kids may be bored with the cooking demonstration while adults may not wish to view the children’s “Mitzvah Mouse” segment.

THE KOSHER VIDEO (1998)

Kos

Produced by the Orthodox Union, this video succinctly explains what kosher means and the certification process the Orthodox Union follows. It explains kosher supervision and tells what some of the kosher symbols mean. The viewer follows the procedure through which a bakery product, previously non-kosher, is changed to meet kosher standards. Note: Although probably produced primarily for food companies interested in certification, this is a clear and excellent explanation of what it means for foods to be kosher. Great for classroom use.

LET’S BAKE MATZOS (1998)

Let

Covers the entire process of producing Shmurah matzot. The film first takes viewers to visit the wheat fields, where the wheat is selected and harvested. The next stop is the grinding mill, where the wheat is ground into flour. Finally, the dough is prepared very quickly and baked in wood-burning stone ovens in the bakery. The video also illustrates the art of making Kosher wine—step-by-step, including the selecting of the grapes and scenes of the winery, where they are crushed, pressed and fermented. The video concludes by showing Jews shopping and preparing other items for the Seder table—and then burning their chometz. Note: This film has a Traditional viewpoint. Teachers who have limited time may wish to show only the first 12 minutes on matzo-baking.
