Han

BERELE, BERELE  (n.d.)

Two separate stories are presented in this Hebrew children’s video. The first, commonly known as Hanale’s Sabbath Dress (28 min.), was written by Yitzhak Dmi’el and is a classic of Israeli children’s literature. It is about Hanale, whose mother makes her a new white dress for Shabbat—which she soils when doing a mitzvah for an old man. The second narrative, Berele, Berele (25 min.), is about a boy who invites friends for his fifth birthday party. Note: The Hebrew level is too difficult for most American students at the age level for which the videos are intended.

HOMELAND  (n.d.)

Hom

Produced for Israel Educational Television, this video was the first in an 8-part series about the history of Jewish settlement in the land of Israel—from the early 19th century through 1948. The format presents Israeli actors who bring to life Jews living in Eretz Yisrael at different time periods. This first video has two segments, each about settlers from the early 19th century. The first deals with Moses Montifiore and his wife and their involvement with Eretz Yisrael in 1827. The second looks at Ashkenazic Jews arriving in Palestine in 1817 and their relationship with the Sephardim who were already living there. Note: This is the only part of the series available to us—therefore giving it limited use. Teachers may wish to use it for Ulpan or Hebrew language students. Teachers should check the level of Hebrew. It may be suitable for 8th grade day school or a high school level.

781.7 HOPLY TOPLY (with Ariela Savir) n.d.
Hop

Israeli Hebrew and English sing-along with singer Ariela Savir and puppet, Hoply Toply. Hoply looks like a “big red tomato-ball” with a face. Dialogue is all in Hebrew with no subtitles, and songs are in Hebrew and English. Songs are intended to teach some basic Hebrew words. Note: This video will not hold the attention of American children. It is intended for preschoolers and kindergarten, but the Hebrew dialogue will stand in the way. Ariela Savir has an unusual voice with very little modulation in vocal tone or facial expression. The puppet is amateurish with a moving flap for a mouth. Israeli children may have difficult with this one as well.

HORA'AT HA'TEFILAH  (1990)

Hor

This Hebrew video accompanies a curriculum in Hebrew containing readiness/ preparation (for Te’filah), concepts, integrating with other curriculum strands and school “Tefilah assemblies,” sources and related materials, and sheets for making transparencies. The video is divided into three parts, each meant to be used separately. The first skit shows what the affect of prayer can do for you [high school and older]. The second skit called “Angels” is a humorous view of someone imagining where prayers are received in the heavens, showing the different types of prayer [junior high - high school]. The third part is wordless and shows scenes of different types of Jews coming to pray at the kotel—and the study guide provides related questions for the students. Note: The Hebrew in the video is too advanced for American students. The curriculum itself can be adapted to American schools, but users must be fluent in Hebrew. Curriculum binder can be found in the CJL Creativity Center.
