THE LOST TRIBES OF ISRAEL (2000) |
|

Produced by the PBS
science series NOVA, this film examines whether or not the Lemba tribe in
South Africa are descended from the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel (those
conquered by the Assyrians in 722 B.C.E. and dispersed). The Lemba have an
oral tradition which claims that they originated from the land of Israel.
Some of their customs—such as ritual slaughter, circumcision, a taboo on
eating pork, and their Hebrew sounding clan names—indicate a possible
connection to Judaism. Through modern technology, geneticists are able to
currently detect a DNA pattern linked to Kohanim—and this genetic marker was
found to be present in the Lemba. Whether or not the Lemba are descendants of
the Lost Tribes is questionable—but their connection to the Jewish people is
fascinating. |

We follow a group
of Holocaust survivors and genealogists—led by genealogist Miriam Weiner—who
return to Poland and the Ukraine in 1992 to search for their roots. The group
is on a 10-day visit touring towns of family origin, synagogues and
cemeteries. They search for family records in state and local archives and
are granted access to previously inaccessible materials. Note: Useful for individuals interested in
genealogy as well as those who wish to see what has become of some of the
previously Jewish areas of Poland and Russia. |
