Why God Chose Mt. Sinai. An
original Midrash animated with still shots and narrated by children. God has
decided to give the Torah to Israel, and every mountain wants to be chosen as
the Torah mount. God finally chooses Mt. Sinai—a quiet, modest little
mountain which thought of others above itself. Note: The film has an amateurish quality, and
the vocal portion is sometimes hard to follow. |

THE MISHKAN (1999) |
|
Mis |
Recommended by
Israel’s Religious Education Ministry, this video shows in detail the
components of the Mishkan (Tabernacle), the portable forerunner of the
Temple, located in the center of the Jews encampment in the desert. The film
uses computer-generated graphics as well as models to describe each part of
the Mishkan. Also shown in detail is the prescribed clothing of the priests
and of the “Kohen Gadol.” The film is halachically accurate. Note: The first six minutes is somewhat
confusing, showing parts of the Mishkan without narration. Teachers may wish
to skip ahead to where the speaking begins. The reference book The Tabernacle in the library provides an excellent
source of further information. |

RUTH
(Testament:
The Bible in Animation) (1996) |
|
Rut |
Using amazing model
animation, this retelling of the Biblical story of Ruth is beautiful to view.
It relates how Ruth, after her husband’s death, remains with her
mother-in-law, Naomi, and promises to stay with her and become one of Naomi’s
people. Ruth proves to be a faithful and loving daughter-in-law, and
eventually marries Boaz, Naomi’s kinsman. Produced for BBC Television. Study
guide available (written by the BJE of Greater New York). Note: This video is part of a series which was
not produced specifically for a Jewish audience. The “Ruth” segment, however,
is suitable for Jewish classroom use—and may be used in conjunction with the
