NATION |
|
Arb |
BOUND IN UNITY (1992) |
|
|
Depicts all of the
areas pertaining to the four species of Sukkot—the lulav and the etrog—from a
Traditional viewpoint. Produced in Israel by the Torah and Land of Israel
Institute, the film shows where each of the species grows and all of the laws
pertaining to them—including measurements according to Rabbi Avrohom Chaim
Na’eh and the Chazon Ish. Also includes interviews with the growers and
scenes from the Arba’ah Minim marketplace and the Kotel. An explanation as to
what each of the species symbolizes according to the Midrash and why we use
them together is also provided. Note: May contain more detailed information on specific measurements and
requirements for each species than all curricula may require, but teachers
can tailor the viewing to their audience. |

The practice of
ritual affirms our place within our faith, fosters a sense of continuity and
identity, and affords stability. But does the process of performing a ritual
guarantee a spiritual experience? Or are rituals merely tools that help us
express spirituality? Ritual: Three
Portraits of Jewish Life examines the place and nature of rituals in
Judaism, and tries to answer these questions. The film explores the
importance and meaning of ritual through examples drawn from life: a
rabbinical student explains why she has incorporated daily prayer into her
life; a family builds a sukkah to
enhance their celebration of the Sukkot holiday; and a mother and father
describe their emotions as they participate in the circumcision ceremony of
their newborn son. Interspersed with these moving examples, theologians
discuss the nature of rituals and try to define exactly what they are. |
